The Sounds of – Recycling

As weather warms in this new season, our sounds of springtime now include the grinding of pavement and beeping of construction vehicles on Oak Park Avenue in the Hemingway District.

Did you know asphalt is the #1 most recycled material in the USA? Yes, more than 90% of asphalt grindings are reused as backfill for roads and trenches. It’s one more way the Village aligns with its external partners to ensure sustainability and meet climate goals.
Work advances to put new water main and sewer service into operation. North of Lake Street, homes and businesses are being connected to the new water main, while electricians prepare to install new conduit and foundations for new light poles. Along Pleasant Street southward, new sanitary service pipes are being joined to the new sewer line.
Save the date for a fun, free Paving the Way Block Party on Saturday, April 11 from 11am – 3pm. Take a longer walk, bring the family, and discover hard-hat deals in the Hemingway District.

Horses and buggies have long gone since this 1890s Oak Park Avenue photo was taken, but we’re still using the same sewer system. Not for much longer though: durable, flexible, clog-free PVC pipes are about to replace the crumbling brick, mortar and clay tile.
