PROJECT UPDATES

Walk This Way

The Hemingway District sure looks different with its ever-deepening trench (more than 12 feet down) behind Oak Park Avenue’s barricades. All sidewalks (and businesses) are open. With the increased spring break foot traffic, pedestrians should continue to push the button at the Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue traffic signals for a walk sign to safely use the crosswalk.

Traffic signals are prioritizing eastbound and westbound traffic on Lake Street at Oak Park Avenue, while still allowing for pedestrian and construction equipment to maneuver north and south safely.

  1. All new sewer and water main work between Ontario and Lake streets is complete. Coordinated work will begin next week on installing new streetlights and associated underground electrical conduit on the block. Farther south, sewer work is nearing completion between Pleasant and Randolph streets. Both blocks remain closed to traffic.

  2. Work advances to put new water main and sewer service into operation. Take a walk, bring the kids, and come check out (construction) trucks on Saturday April 11 from 11am – 3 pm. Rain or shine, the Hemingway District is planning a day full of music, food, shopping, and surprises! Find all the details on the Hemingway District website.

  3. Avenue Trivia starts now! DOOPers (Dear Old Oak Parkers), take note! We’re sharing fun facts about Oak Park Avenue reaching back 150 years.

What was the name of the Oak Park Avenue department store best remembered for its bridal and prom dresses and a tea room?

Visit the trivia section on our website for the answer.
