More Concrete Progress

You will notice cement trucks out this week, from Pleasant Street to South Boulevard.

1. A new concrete base layer is being poured from south to north, through the end of July. It’s part of the process prior to installing brick pavers along Oak Park Avenue throughout the Hemingway District. (To see what the finished product will look like, just look down next time you cross Marion Street in Downtown Oak Park.) The base provides a solid foundation, ensuring that trucks and heavy traffic won’t push bricks into the ground. Concrete prevents shifting, ruts, and sinking hazards.

2. ICYMI over the holiday weekend, the new Bike to the Biz promotion has kicked off and continues through October 31. No need for FOMO! There’s still plenty of time to enter to win $250 in July by collecting receipts ($10 minimum at 4 different businesses)—and the envelopes to store them in—from the growing list of participating District retailers. To enter the monthly drawing, just drop your completed envelope off at the Downtown Oak Park UPS Store, (805 Lake Street), open seven days a week.

3. Did you know? The earliest form of bicycles was invented in 1817, in Germany. They had no pedals and were called ‘dandy horses.’ That’s a hint, since this week’s trivia question also relates to cycling.
